When we speak of Hungarian culture, we are speaking of ourselves, for we are the very embodiment of this culture. A nation endures as long as it lives within its own culture and preserves it. This means that the existence or disappearance of Hungarian culture depends on the choices we make. To live in our own culture means that we are our own contemporaries. The written and audiovisual content, along with the programs created by the Petőfi Cultural Agency (PKÜ), are assertions and affirmations of this choice.
“Modern Hungarian culture is national culture.” Our national identity is also our cultural identity. Our Hungarian heritage is a distinct trait, a value that is competitive in the global arena. In this broader context, our culture is unified and organic.
The foundation of our culture and national identity is the Hungarian language. The PKÜ’s social mission is to ensure access to culture in one’s mother tongue. The PKÜ aims to shift Hungarians from being mere consumers of culture to becoming producers and embodiments of culture. To achieve this, it emphasizes culture’s role in community building. And thus when we speak of culture, we speak of creating a resilient culture that can withstand crises.
